OVERVIEW
There will be 8 barns on the Belmont Bio-Ag campus, each capable of housing 2500-head of cattle. The barns are designed to create a state-of-the-art humane practices beef finishing facility with 33 percent more space per animal than normally experienced in U.S. facilities, continuous and free access to water, immediate handling of all waste, scientifically designed and intensively monitored feed regimens, and complete traceability of all cattle. Whenever possible, cattle raised in local operations that meet Belmont Bio-Ag's high standards for environmental practices and humane treatment of livestock, will be finished in the facility. Over time, Belmont Bio-Ag plans to extend its Environmental Management System to all of its suppliers.
STANDARDS FOR ANIMAL CARE
Consumers are starting to care about more than how meat tastes. They want to know where their food is coming from and how the animals are being treated. A new area of scientific research is developing in Europe and the United States that uses scientific methods to make barns and loading areas less stressful for animals. Animals under stress don't gain weight as readily, and have more health problems and more variability in meat quality. Belmont Bio-Ag's barns, nutrition, and animal handling programs have been designed with the latest scientific research on humane treatment in mind.
ODOR
If Belmont Bio-Ag's barns have a strong odor, that means the waste is not moving out of the barns fast enough, putting SymbiosysTM out of balance. Belmont Bio-Ag's water-based manure removal system slows down anaerobic activity, bacteria working to decompose the manure. Belmont Bio-Ag's feedlot staff will, throughout each day, perform routine inspection of the performance of the manure collection system and wash down the barn floors daily. This means less odor, healthier cattle, and more nutrients available in the digester. The design of SymbiosysTM allows Belmont Bio-Ag to be a good neighbor and more humane and efficient business.
